"Why does bridal makeup cost more than makeup for a regular night out?" I get asked this question quite often by brides.
There are a number of reasons why bridal makeup costs more... or does it cost more? When you really think about what you're getting for your money - is it really more expensive?
For a full face of makeup for a standard night out, I charge £30. This usually takes me approx 30-60 minutes to complete and involves very little in terms of pre-consultation with the client. Compare this to a £45 bridal makeup trial, which takes a minimum of 1.5 hours (usually longer!), includes a full consultation on your skin type to ensure your makeup lasts and looks great all day and night; discussion about the look you're trying to achieve - often looking at photographs of makeup and tailoring it to your specific requirements; considering makeup finishes and colours to co-ordinate with the theme of your wedding, your skin tone etc; and this is all before any makeup has been applied. Makeup application itself can sometimes be more than one full face makeup application including lashes if the bride wants to try out a couple of different styles. I then sit down with the bride and make a full record of the products used and take photos of the finish look so it can be recreated exactly on your wedding day. So for £15 more than a standard night out makeup application, you can see how much more is involved - my additional time, professional expertise, and additional use of products and tools etc.
Another reason why my bridal makeup costs are higher is... you are hiring a fully qualified, trained and insured professional makeup artist. There are many non-professionals out there who charge less, but quite often they will not be insured, will not be qualified or experienced, and won't be using the same high-end products and tools that a professional does. My training specifically covered bridal and photographic makeup and I gained the highest level grades in these areas, so you know you're going to look great on your big day (all day!) as well as in the photographs that you'll treasure for the rest of your life. Professional makeup artists are also taught at qualification level, about hygiene - no bride wants an eye infection on her honeymoon!
When hiring a professional makeup artist, you are paying for reliability and peace of mind. All my brides have a written contract with me when they book. You know that I will be there! You know that it will be me personally that does your makeup on the day. There have been a number of times when I've been contacted at very little notice by a desperate bride in need who has been let down by an unprofessional makeup artist who has probably got a better paid job somewhere else - by this point the bride has already paid out for a trial and is having to pay out again. You know that won't happen to you if you book a professional.
So, there is a reason why people say "you get what you pay for" and "good work ain't cheap and cheap work ain't good". This is your wedding day! Hire a professional makeup artist and have a worry-free night's sleep the night before one of the most important days of your life.
